Fear can be rational or irrational, like every other emotion, based on the objectivity of its underlying cognitions. Even using it to motivate people to act in their own best interest can be ethical if it isn't a lie, and not evil, as suggested by someone here.

Well said Joel,

I must admit there have been many an opourtunity wasted throughout my life simply because I was too fearfull to take a
step. Simply because my mind told me I MIGHT fail not that I would.
It never ceases to amaze me how debilitating fear can be when not kept in check. And I've come to believe that you simply cant think it away you have to ACT it way, have the courage to take the first step when fear tells you hide.

Thanks

Like Danielle said, fear is not a bad thing. The way we respond to fear is bad most of the times.

Fear is a powerful enemy, but it can also be a powerful ally.

Great article Joel!

Fear turning to anger, anger to hate, hate leads to suffering. At least that is the believe in the Star Wars movies.

Fear in itself is not a bad thing. Simply our reaction to it and decisions following it that dictates if it will be a positive of negative influence on our lives.

Fear is usefull to survive, that much is correct, jennifer,
but fear is used as a tool to control people and that is EVIL.
just think of the multitude of scares coming up constantly and instilling fear in people. in my time I have experienced Hitler, WWII, Stalin, Cold war, nuclear threat, and lately AIDS, Mad cow disease, never ending wars, inflation, terrorism, bird flu to name just a few.
You cant help but come to the conclusion, that there are people causing these scares to their own selfish aims. And when looking for the responsible it´s easy to find out who they are: Just ask who is benefiting from all this.
it´s very difficult to go from this realisation to not letting yourself be influenced by a scare, because the results are affecting the life of all people.

Hi Joel...

Excellent post!

I think fear in and of itself helped us survive as a species. If we had never invented this emotion we would certainly not be here...

But, as you have stated, today, our fear seems to often be inappropriate and out of touch with what is in our best interest.

Most of us no longer have to worry that a tiger will attack us as we sleep.. ya know? LOL!

I think it is not fear that is the problem but our embracing an unhealthy fear!

Thanks for your insight!

Blessings and joy,

Jen
