Forgetting the Magic
Do you remember what it was like to be a child?
Not the frustration.
There was plenty of that.
Not the endless procession of “NO” and “You can’t do that.”
Not even the tantrum demands for something in a spirit of “I’ve got to have this or I’ll die.”
No. Not that either.
And for those of us who were loved, not even that wonderful ocean of warm love that surrounded us and made us feel safe.
What else is there?
Give up?
How about dreams, wishes, and a heart that can stretch from one end of the universe to another in a moment.
That’s what it means to be a child. [Continue reading: Make a Wish]
Stuck in Line
Do you ever call some number for customer service and sit through a nearly endless series of voice prompts just to ask a simple question?
Have you ever dealt with someone who hides behind the tiny slice of the world that he seems to be in charge of? He might only be in charge of a form, but he’s determined to make you fill it out according to every rule he can think of, as if his life depended on it.
Someone designs an efficient way to do something in business or anywhere else. This is provided as a series of steps, questions, forms.
Then, some workers are given the job of following and enforcing the process, too often blindly, or ignorant of the big picture.
And sometimes it’s a machine (such as voice prompts or a series of forms on the internet) that steps you through this process.
When people are dehumanized by giving them tiny responsibilities and cut off from real goals and a spirit of service, it’s no wonder that they sometimes resort to pettiness, as they try to hold on to the only small power they are given.
Of course, there are many workers who provide wonderful service, even in the midst of a broken system. [Continue reading: Too Many Experts]
Fear and Predictability
Control is overrated.
Sure, we want the world to work in somewhat predictable ways, but at what cost?
When my kids were little and fighting, sometimes the only thing I thought about was getting control and stopping the fighting.
And for a person or country that’s under attack and wants to make it stop, control seems to be everything, even if that control limits someone’s freedom and self-expression.
We get scared when the world seems out of control and we don’t know what to do.
We like being in predictable situations where we can fit in and know what to do, without challenge or struggle. [Continue reading: Why Don’t We Teach Children To Be Leaders?]
Have You Ever Wanted to Be Powerful?
Have you every wanted to be powerful beyond measure?
Or, are you afraid of being too powerful, and abusing that power?
Or, do you simply feel unworthy of being powerful?
Marianne Williamson, in A Return to Love writes:
Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of G-d. Your playing small does not serve the world…We are all meant to shine as children do.
What are we looking for when we search for power? [Continue reading: Personal Dreams and the Abuse of Power]
All of life’s a stage
It’s an old question in philosophy and religion:
Is our experience of life in this world real?
It sounds a little crazy to ask the question, doesn’t it? It makes you think of people who are mentally unbalanced, who can’t tell the difference between the world they live in and the hallucinations that run around in their heads.
What do people mean when they ask if our experience of life in this world is real? [Continue reading: Is Life Real, or Just a Dream?]
